Cala Galera (GR) – One hundred crews gathered in Cala Galera for the J/70 European Champiohsip, an event that promises to be the most attended of the 2024 one design season. Awarded by the J/70 International Class and organized by the J/70 Italian Class in collaboration with the Circolo Nautico e della Vela Argentario, the event confirms the J/70 as the reference monotype, both from the point of view of the distribution of the various fleets, and as regards the technical level expressed on the occasion of the main event.
And a main event will be the one scheduled at the Argentario between next Tuesday and Saturday, when the European title will be awarded at the end of a series that will count a maximum of fourteen races (a gap expected after the fifth regatta), all with the outcome absolutely uncertain, considering the presence of all the great protagonists of the class. Among these are Luca Domenici’s Notaro Team, 2015 European champion and winner of the 2023 J/70 Cup; Wanderlust by Sofia Giondi, 2024 Italian champion, and Petite Terrible-Adria Ferries by Claudia Rossi, three-time European champion – record for the J/70 class – and winner of the first leg of the 2024 J/70 Cup. And again Patakin by Luis Albert , winner at the Argentario in 2023; J-Curve by Mauro Roversi; Long live Alessandro Molla, winner of the J/70 Cup 2022 and the former world champions of Catapult. Then pay attention to outsiders like Lenny, former Olympic champions Tonu and Thomas Toniste; to the Americans Dark Energy by Laura Grodin, Warcanoe by Michael Goldfarb and Furio, by the multiple J/24 world champion Keith Whittermore; and the new entry Nika of Vladimir Prosikin, winner for years in various onedesign classes and already RC44 world champion.
The event, coordinated by PRO Giancarlo Crevatin, follows by a month the first part of the J/70 Cup which, held on the same regatta course and won by Petite Terrible-Adria Ferries on its return after almost three seasons of absence, served as a test general.
Unmissable moments of the J/70 European Championship will be the opening ceremony, scheduled for Monday afternoon starting at 6pm, the official dinner, the Gin Vento Party and the awards ceremony, the final act scheduled for Saturday afternoon at the headquarters of the Sailing and Nautical Club Argentario.
“Not even the time to start when the most awaited moment of the season is already upon us – comments a smiling Federico Siragna, who recently arrived at the quay in Cala Galera – Given the number of participants, the level of the fleet and the state of the art of organizational machine, which we put to the test on the first stage of the J/70 Cup, we expect a truly unforgettable J/70 European Championship. I thank the Circolo Nautico della Vela Argentario for the great support, the secretariat of the J/70 Italian Class. , which is experiencing exalted but frenetic days, and those who are collaborating so that this can be the best J/70 European Championship ever”.
